#GoCarGarage101Things to Know

No clue on your car tyre size? We got you!

Part of owning a car is knowing the important details of the car such as the car tyre size because there might come a day when you will need to know these crucial details.

One of the most neglected detail is the size of your car tyre. Car tyres are the only thing from your car touching the floor. It is important to check the tyre  thread and replace your new tyre if it’s worn out. They are controlling your car’s steering, breaking, acceleration and absorbing road shock. Replacing them would require basic details on the tyre – size of it. For those of you that have no clue on where to find the size and details of your wheels, continue reading.

The most common method of identifying tyres and their size is looking for a series of numbers and letters on the side of the tyre (known as the sidewall).

Here’s a breakdown of the meaning behind the numbers and letters:

1. 225 is the width of the tyre in millimetres, known as the section width. This measurement is taken from the widest point of its outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner sidewall.
2. 50 is the height of the tyre sidewall as a percentage of the width, also known as the aspect ratio or profile
3. R is the internal construction – the R stands for Radial. This is the most common type of tyre used today.
4. 16 is the diameter of the wheel rim in inches. A tyre and wheel diameter must always match before the tyre is mounted on the wheel.
5. 92 is the maximum weight the tyre can carry, AKA the load rating
6. V is the speed rating of the tyre and is always represented by a letter. The speed rating works hand-in-hand with the load rating. In other words, the speed rating is the maximum speed the tyre can reach when operating at its maximum load carrying capacity.
7. Some tyres may also have the letters XL after the speed rating (not shown on our diagram). This stands for Extra Load and means the tyre can be inflated to a higher pressure. This increases the tyre’s maximum load. Typically this is to do with larger types of vehicles like SUVs.
